Let me tell you something nobody in the natural hair community talks about enough.
Working out with natural hair in a protective style does not have to mean choosing between your fitness and your hair. I work out at least three times a week with my twists intact and they still look fresh every single time.
Here is exactly how I do it.
The Problem With Sweat and Natural Hair
Sweat is not the enemy of natural hair, it is actually slightly beneficial for your scalp. But the moisture from sweat hitting your hair shaft unevenly causes the cuticle to swell and lift creating frizz, disrupting your curl pattern, and breaking down your protective style faster than anything else.
The solution is not to avoid sweating. The solution is to control how sweat interacts with your hair.
That is what this entire routine is built around

Step 1 — Create an Oil Barrier Before You Work Out
Before I put on my scarf I apply a few drops of Classic Curlz Lux Glow Oil to my scalp and hair.
Here is the science behind this...and yes, there is actual science.
Oil creates a barrier on the hair shaft that slows moisture penetration. This is the same principle behind the LOC method: Liquid, Oil, Cream where oil seals moisture in and blocks external moisture from disrupting the hair. When sweat hits hair that has been coated with a lightweight oil it has a much harder time penetrating the cuticle and causing frizz.
Lux Glow Oil is perfect for this because it is lightweight and non-greasy and just 2 to 3 drops is all you need. It absorbs quickly without making your hair feel heavy or coated before you even start your workout.

Step 2 — Cover With a Satin Scarf
This step is non-negotiable. I never work out without my satin scarf.
Here is why the scarf matters:
A satin scarf absorbs sweat before it reaches your hair while the smooth satin surface minimizes friction that causes frizz. Cotton towels and regular headbands actually pull moisture into your hair and create friction against the cuticle, the exact opposite of what you want.
Tie your satin scarf securely so it stays in place throughout your entire workout. Do not be self-conscious about it. This is your hair investment protecting itself. 🌿
What to use: Any satin or silk scarf large enough to cover your entire style.

Step 3 — Keep The Scarf On Until Your Hair Is Completely Dry
This is the step most people skip and it is the most important one.
When you finish your workout your hair and scalp are warm and slightly damp from sweat. If you remove the scarf immediately and expose your hair to air while it is still warm and damp, the cuticle is open and vulnerable. Frizz sets in almost instantly.
Wait until your hair feels completely dry and cool to the touch before removing the scarf. This alone will extend your style significantly longer than any product can.

Step 4 — Refresh With Power Tonic
Once your hair is completely dry remove the scarf and immediately spray Classic Curlz Power Tonic on your hair and scalp.
Power Tonic rehydrates your scalp and hair after the workout by replacing any moisture lost during exercise and restoring the lightweight hydration your protective style needs to stay defined and fresh.
Do not rub or scrunch after spraying. Just let it absorb.

Step 5 — Cover With a Bonnet or Scarf and Let It Set
Immediately after applying Power Tonic cover your hair with a satin bonnet and leave it on while the product sets.
This is the same principle as deep conditioning under a plastic cap. The warmth from your scalp helps the product absorb more deeply while the bonnet keeps everything in place as your hair settles back into its style.
I put on my bonnet right after spraying Power Tonic and leave it on while I apply my makeup and get dressed. By the time I remove it my hair looks refreshed and my twists are back to looking defined and moisturized.
Step 6 — Style and Finish With Edge Freeze

Remove the bonnet, style your hair, and finish with Classic Curlz Edge Freeze on your edges.
Sweat can loosen edges faster than almost anything else. Edge Freeze is alcohol free and holds through heat, humidity, and sweat making it perfect for post-workout edge maintenance.
A small amount applied with an edge brush gives you clean, defined edges that last from the gym all the way through the rest of your day.
